NUH: Seven sanitation workers, including six women, were killed on the spot and four others critically injured after a speeding multi-utility van ran over them on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on Saturday morning.
The accident took place around 10am near pillar number 76 at Ibrahimvas village in the Firozpur Jhirka block of Nuh district. The group had stopped to clean the road when the van hit them at high speed.
The deceased have been identified as Resham (60), wife of Gulab Singh; Prem (60), wife of Ramsingh; Ratna (40), wife of Ramesh; Pista (30), wife of Mahendra; Jaydei (40), wife of Deshraj; Satyavati (30), wife of Raju; and As Mohammad (45), son of Aaseen. Among the injured, four women were identified, three of whom are in critical condition. They were shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for advanced treatment.
Social worker Ansar Khan from Ibrahimvas village, who witnessed the aftermath, said he heard the cries from his nearby fields and rushed to the spot, where he found bodies scattered on one side of the expressway.
He described the scene as terrifying. Emergency services were called, and ambulances transported the injured to the hospital.
The accident caused a major traffic jam on the expressway for some time.
Deputy Commissioner Vishram Meena and Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar visited the spot and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
Police have registered a case based on the statements of eyewitnesses and the injured. The bodies have been sent to the Nuh district hospital for post-mortem. Authorities have also begun collecting CCTV footage from cameras installed near the accident site as part of the investigation.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal denies 'embarrassing' rumours: ‘Neither are we losing market share, nor will we ever…’
Deepinder Goyal, CEO and founder, Zomato

An anonymous Reddit post recently claimed that things inside Zomato are “going off the rails.” According to the post, leadership recently allegedly admitted that Zomato is losing market share to Zepto Cafe and Swiggy, adding that the employees are now required to order from Zomato at least seven times a month. Responding to the claims, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal said that “All of this is utter nonsense”. Stating that “it is embarrassing to even clarify this,” Goyal said that “Neither are we losing market share, nor will we ever force our employees to order on Zomato.”
“Freedom of choice is something we stand for vehemently,” he further added.

Reddit post claims Zomato forcing employees to order food from the app at least seven times a month

As mentioned above, Reddit user r/StartUpIndia claimed that the food delivery platform is forcing its employees to order from the app seven times a week, adding that “ordering from competitors is outright banned in the office”. The Reddit post describes confusion at the leadership level. Rakesh Ranjan, CEO of Zomato’s food delivery business, reportedly told employees to “stay focused” and “get back on track” during a townhall, but was removed from the role just two days later.
The post also mentions a toxic work environment, where micromanagement and public criticism of employees are common. “The only thing keeping the company profitable now is platform fees,” it claims, adding that there’s little focus on long-term sustainability.
There are growing issues with delivery partners as well, the user alleged. It said that many riders are underpaid compared to competitors and are quitting, leading to a rise in delivery fraud and service outages. “Orders go offline not because restaurants are closed, but because there’s literally no one available to pick them up,” the post says.

It is embarrassing to even clarify this – but doing it since many people reached out to me with concern.

NEW DELHI: After Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) disappointing run in IPL 2025 continued with a five-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), former India batter Ambati Rayudu said that the five-time champions would now become highly attentive about evolving with the modern style of T20 cricket.
Despite making several changes to their playing XI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, CSK’s search for a victory remained unsuccessful, leaving them stuck at the bottom of the points table in tenth place.
“I know it’s the lowest of lows, but it’s also a great learning for CSK. If you rest on your laurels and don’t keep an eye on the future, this is what can happen. From here on, they’ll be very, very vigilant about evolving with the game. Even MS Dhoni has acknowledged that the game has moved on, and I’m sure he’s already thinking about building a team for next year,” Rayudu said on JioStar.
“We’ve seen some shining lights in the batting line-up, particularly Brevis and Mhatre — those are real positives. Sometimes, it takes a season like this to ground a team and remind them that the game is always bigger than us. You have to stick to the basics and stay humble,” he added.

Sachin Tendulkar at 52: Power, Pride, and a Nation’s Pulse

The only bright spots for CSK were Ayush Mhatre’s 30 and Dewald Brevis’ 42 on debut for the franchise. Rayudu also spoke about CSK’s continuous struggles with the bat this season.
“I don’t think there’s confusion in shot selection — if anything, there aren’t enough shots being played. The batters are taking more time than they should.”

Poll

Should CSK make major changes to their squad for next season?

He further commented on the changes made by the franchise: “The change in personnel was needed, and what we’re seeing now is more of a trial run for next season. I don’t think CSK can carry forward most of their current squad — at best, seven or eight players might be retained,” Rayudu said.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s IPL 2025 clash, Shreyas Iyer will lead Punjab Kings against his former side Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens. PBKS had earlier defeated KKR by defending 111 in New Chandigarh.
“He’ll carry great memories of the ground and of KKR, having won the IPL with them last season. There’ll be a bit of fire in the belly — he wasn’t retained, and now he’s captaining Punjab. I think he’ll be focused and motivated. Punjab looks the stronger side this season, and I see them as serious contenders for the playoffs,” Rayudu concluded.

'Not interested in playing in India': Pakistan cricketer sparks controversy after Pahalgam attack

NEW DELHI: The India vs Pakistan cricket debate has once again reignited following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Amid rising tensions, Pakistan women’s cricket team opener Gull Feroza has reinforced her team’s position regarding participation in matches scheduled in India.
Feroza, who featured in three games during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier as an opener, confirmed that Pakistan will not travel to India for the main tournament. Pakistan secured qualification for the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India this September.
With Pakistan’s qualification now confirmed, so is the likelihood of a hybrid model for the tournament—similar to the one used in the Asia Cup—where their matches against India will be hosted at a neutral venue. The development has sparked controversy, especially with India set to host the global event.

Poll

Do you agree with Pakistan’s decision not to travel to India for the World Cup?

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi had already stated that the team would not travel to India for the World Cup.

Sachin Tendulkar at 52: Power, Pride, and a Nation’s Pulse

Meanwhile, Feroza echoed that sentiment in a conversation with PakPassion.
“We know this much that we will play in Asian conditions and we are not playing in India. This is clear. Neither are we interested in playing in India,” Feroza told PakPassion.
“So, wherever it is played – hopefully in Sri Lanka or Dubai – those conditions are similar to the ones you get in Asia. The Qualifiers were at home, and the staff prepared tracks accordingly. Wherever the World Cup games are played, the conditions will be similar to those we have at home. So, our preparation will be according to that, and we are ready for that,” she added.
Earlier this year, the Indian men’s team also declined to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. As a result, their matches—including the final—were held in Dubai.

‘Jaat’ Box Office Collection Day 16: Sunny Deol-starrer records its lowest on third Friday as it competes with Emraan Hashmi’s ‘Ground Zero’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kesari 2’

The ‘Gadar 2’ star made it to the big screens this year with ‘Jaat.’ Released on April 10, 2025, the movie has completed a successful theatrical run of 16 days and entered the third week. With its fair share of ups and downs, it maintained a strong grip at the box office and currently has crossed the Rs. 80 crore mark. However, if we look at the day 16 collection of the film, it can be seen that the Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda action drama is slowly losing its charm.

The showdown with ‘Ground Zero’ and ‘Kesari Chapter 2’

When ‘Jaat’ entered its second week, it faced tough competition from Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan, and Ananaya Panday starrer ‘Kesari Chapter 2.’ The courtroom drama left an impact on the people and garnered love and appreciation from critics and the audience alike. On April 25, which marked its second Friday, the movie minted Rs. 4.51 crore.
On the other hand, Emraan Hashmi’s ‘Ground Zero’, which made it to the theatres this Friday, as per the early estimates, has made Rs. 1 crore business.

Maruti goes slow on new plant amid sluggish sales

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki has decided to go slow on land acquisition for a planned Rs 35,000-crore second factory in Gujarat due to poor growth in car sales. This factory was aimed at taking the company’s production capacity to four million (40 lakh) units by 2030-31.
When asked whether the company has gone slow on the project, Maruti chairman R C Bhargava said, “There is no delay, (but) there is no hurry about doing anything there because market growth is 1-2%. Why would I put up another million units in a hurry? Unless the market shows there is a need.”

Maruti goes slow on new plant amid sluggish sales (1).

Bhargava said Maruti has sufficient expansion work going in its present factories at Haryana and Gujarat. “I have enough capacity to come up in Kharkhoda (Haryana). Some are coming up in Manesar, (and) some are coming up in Gujarat’s first plant. There is no hurry about the Gujarat’s second plant. The site has not yet been finalised.”
The despondent mood at the country’s biggest carmaker highlights the worry in the broader car industry. The industry had enjoyed strong growth in the post-Covid period but is increasingly finding the going tough as higher prices of vehicles and uncertainties around the economy and stock markets are keeping buyers away.
Companies are having a relook at new investment plans as they fear overcapacity may come to haunt businesses if the slowdown persists.
Bhargava said to kickstart demand, there is a need for govt support for creation of an all-new segment of entry-level cars – smaller than the Alto. This, he said, will prompt more two-wheeler buyers to upgrade to cars, something which is not happening today as car prices, even in the entry segments have gone up by around Rs 90,000 due to govt mandates on safety and emissions.
“There is an example of Japanese kei cars. They have different sets of regulations compared to other cars and taxes (on them) are much lower. They are smaller and cheaper and more affordable. That’s how Japan switched from two-wheelers to cars. We need to do a similar thing here.”
He added that developing a highly-affordable mini car is quite challenging, even for a mass-maker like Maruti, and thus there is a need for govt support. “Today no one can develop at that cost, not even the Chinese.”
On whether the income tax relief in the Union Budget will help in boosting car sales, he said it looks difficult as car prices have moved up substantially and people will also use the additional income for other household work. “People have other expenditure and will not use it (income tax relief) to buy cars. They have other priorities.”

K Kasturirangan, visionary space scientist and architect of India’s education reforms, passes away at 84

NEW DELHI: Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, an eminent space scientist, educationist and the guiding force behind India’s space and education milestones, passed away on Friday in Bengaluru at the age of 84. A former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and the chief architect of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Kasturirangan had been battling age-related ailments following a heart attack he suffered in Sri Lanka in July 2023. He breathed his last at 10:43 am at his Bengaluru residence.
His mortal remains will be kept at the Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru, on April 27 for people to pay their respects. He is survived by two sons.
Kasturirangan-led Isro from 1994 to 2003, a period marked by major milestones, including the operationalisation of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and the successful flight-test of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. Under his stewardship, Isro pursued technological self-reliance and began planning ambitious missions such as Chandrayaan, despite facing international sanctions following India’s 1998 nuclear tests.
PM Narendra Modi said, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr K Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered.” He praised Kasturirangan’s pivotal role in elevating Isro and said India would always be grateful for his contributions to education.
President Droupadi Murmu acknowledged his integral role in shaping both India’s space programme and the NEP.
Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan remembered him as an “intellectual titan”, saying, “To me, he was far more than a mentor — he was a guiding light, a wellspring of wisdom, compassion, and quiet strength.”
Science and technology minister Jitendra Singh called him “a visionary scientist and a guiding force behind India’s space programme”. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he made significant contributions in India’s space exploration and contributed in various positions in key policy making.
Prior to heading Isro, Kasturirangan directed the Isro Satellite Centre and was responsible for overseeing development of next-generation satellites including INSAT-2 and IRS-1A & 1B. As project director for BHASKARA-I and II, India’s first experimental Earth observation satellites, he laid the groundwork for the nation’s remote sensing capabilities.
An accomplished astrophysicist, Kasturirangan’s research spanned high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy. He played a key role in conceptualising India’s first space-based high-energy astronomy observatory and authored over 200 research papers in leading national and international journals. He also edited six books.
After his illustrious space career, Kasturirangan pivoted to education policy and led the drafting committee of the NEP-2020, introducing a transformative vision for Indian schooling and higher education. Later, he spearheaded the development of the National Curriculum Framework.
He had famously stated, “The vision of India’s new education system is to ensure that it touches each and every citizen’s life and creates a just and equitable society.”
Kasturirangan was awarded all three of India’s top civilian honours — Padma Shri (1982), Padma Bhushan (1992), and Padma Vibhushan (2000). He was also Member of Rajya Sabha (2003–09), Planning Commission member, National Institute of Advanced Studies director (2004–2009) and JNU chancellor.
Born on Oct 24, 1940, in Ernakulam, Kerala, he earned his physics degree from Bombay University and his PhD in experimental high-energy astronomy from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. Kasturirangan leaves behind a legacy that spans the cosmos and classrooms.

Search ops in 6 Jammu districts intensified to track down hiding terrorists

JAMMU: Security forces on Friday intensified search operations to track down terrorists believed to be hiding in forest areas, with multi-layered cordon in six districts of Jammu division — Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Kishtwar and Kathua.
Meanwhile, the Army paid tributes to Havildar Jhantu Ali Sheikh of 6 Para of the Special Forces, who was killed in a gunfight with terrorists in Dudu-Basantgarh area of Udhampur on Thursday. The joint search operation by the Army, J&K Police and CRPF to track down three terrorists, who managed to escape during the firefight, continued on the second day on Friday, said an official.
Sources said combing operations were also underway in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar, Triyath area of Rajouri district, adjoining areas of Chan Roriyan in Kathua district and Lasana in Poonch district. A security review meeting chaired by divisional commissioner Ramesh Kumar and IGP Bhim Sen Tuti was held in Doda.
There have been seven encounters in the Kathua-Udhampur-Kishtwar region of Jammu over the past month, resulting in the death of five terrorists and as many security personnel.
On April 20, the security forces had mounted a search operation after getting information about the movement of three suspicious persons near a forest area in Rasana in Kathua district.
The forces have also intensified their efforts to sanitise the Kathua-Samba region and nab the terrorists who had initially fled during an encounter in Safiyan on March 23.
In the Chatroo forest area of Kishtwar, three terrorists were killed during an encounter on April 11-12, and a huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered, but the search operation continues as more terror operatives are suspected to be hiding in the area.

Israel's Netanyahu calls Hamas 'Nazis' at Holocaust memorial

Commemorated both in Israel and in Jewish communities around the world, this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day started with a ceremony on Wednesday evening at Yad Vashem, the world’s most well-known Holocaust museum in Jerusalem.
The ceremony took place amid the ongoing war in Gaza, and with the political situation in Israel threatening to escalate into an unprecedented constitutional crisis. Israeli officials, ambassadors and Holocaust survivors were in attendance.
The rest of the world observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, the date when the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated by the Soviet Red Army. But Israel and the Jewish diaspora have their own memorial day on the Hebrew date of Nissan 27, a date chosen due to its close proximity to the beginning of the monthlong Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in April 1943.

Netanyahu: Hamas wants to ‘destroy all the Jews’

Similar to last year’s event, the official ceremony and speeches on Wednesday evening centered on the terrorist attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023 which killed some 1,200 people, and the ensuing war in Gaza launched by Israel. Hamas has been designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, Germany, the US and other states.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who arrived late to the ceremony due to what his office said was a security incident, once again echoed his comparison of Hamas members to “Nazis, like Hitler,” who were responsible for the deaths of 6 million European Jews during World War II.
“They want to kill, to destroy all the Jews,” said Netanyahu. “They openly declare their intent to destroy the Jewish state, and that will not happen.”
Yad Vashem and its head, Dani Dayan, have repeatedly called for refraining from comparing the October 7 terrorist attacks to the Holocaust, in an effort not to marginalize both events.

Survivor calls for hostages’ return

Some of the hostages released from Hamas captivity in Gaza were also in attendance as this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day events got underway.
Other former hostages, as well as the families of the Israelis currently held in Gaza, traveled to Poland to take part in the March of the Living, the annual event to commemorate the death marches from Auschwitz to Birkenau.
During the official ceremony in Jerusalem on Wednesday evening, Tunisia-born survivor Gad Fartouk defied protocol by shouting that the hostages should return home while lighting one of six torches in memory of Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
Fartouk, 93, the first Holocaust survivor of North African descent to light a memorial torch during the official ceremony, told Israeli outlet Ynet he felt it was “empty” not to mention the 59 hostages — some 20 of them believed to still be alive — still held by Hamas in Gaza.

Jharkhand minister's embarrassing gaffe: 'Himachal CM Sukhu should resign for Pahalgam attack'; later a botched coverup

NEW DELHI: Sudivya Kumar, Jharkhand’s tourism minister and senior leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, left his party and alliance partner Congress embarrassed as he demanded the resignation of Himachal chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu for the Pahalgam terror attack. On Tuesday, 26 innocent civilians – mostly tourists- were killed brutally by Pakistan backed terrorists in Pahalgam.
“Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu should resign over the Pahalgam incident because he failed to save the lives of his people. It is an unfortunate incident and I feel Himachal chief minister should resign,” the senior Jharkhand minister said on Thursday.
Ironically, when Sudivya Kumar realised his gaffe and tried to clarify his remarks, he ended up making another gaffe as he took the name of PDP supremo Mehbooba Mufti, perhaps unaware of the fact that the chief minister of J&K is Omar Abdullah and not Mehbooba. The Jharkhand minister, in a bid to cover up the embarrassment, claimed that he had made the remarks “sarcastically.”
“In the Pahalgam incident, six terrorists infiltrated from a distance of 300 km. Whose failure is this, if not the Centre’s Mehbooba Mufti (PDP chief) is not accountable,” the Jharkhand minister said.
The JMM leader also stoked a controversy as he targeted the Prime Minister, the defence minister and the home minister for failing to take responsibility for the security lapse and also questioned why national mourning was not announced.
The minister said that responsibility should be fixed at the highest level. “If the PM doesn’t respond, then who will?” he said and then cited precedents of “moral accountability”. Sudivya Kumar pointed out resignations of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Nitish Kumar as railway ministers, and Shivraj Patil as home minister following national tragedies. “Earlier, leaders set high standards and accepted moral responsibility. Why is that missing now?” the Jharkhand minister said.
The opposition BJP reacted strongly to Jharkhand minister’s statements.
Leader of opposition in state assembly and former Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi termed his remarks “shameful and disgraceful,” especially at a time when “not just the nation, but the entire world is mourning the tragedy in Kashmir”.
“The sarcasm displayed by the minister is a reflection of deep-rooted arrogance and madness that seems to have overtaken him. His behaviour is extremely embarrassing,” Marandi said.
